Baby Development in 13 Week 

Welcome to the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The placenta has developed now which provides oxygen, nutrients and waste disposal. Another function of placenta is making the pregnancy hormones i.e. progesterone and estrogen which helps to maintain pregnancy. Baby’s head is half as the size of whole body. The skin of baby is very soft and delicate and is covered with fine hair called lanugos which protects the baby’s skin with a substance called “vernix” shielding the baby from amniotic fluid.

Diet

You are almost done with 1st trimester and now is the time when you expand healthy food choices. It’s a great time to increase intake of calcium, vitamin D and magnesium as they aid in baby’s developing bones and teeth.

Exercises

Exercise is very beneficial during pregnancy because:

  • Build muscles.
  • Provides more energy.
  • Keeps you healthy.
  • Helps you get prepared for pregnancy.

In the second trimester, there is an increase in the fluid volume as the uterus grows in size. The best exercise during pregnancy is walk and you can increase the walk time slowly. Before starting any new exercise, it’s better to first talk to your healthcare provider.

At every antenatal appointment, remember that:

  • Talk to your doctor about medicines and supplements that you are taking.
  • Ask about safe exercises.
  • Talk about the tests that you should consider during your pregnancy.
  • Discuss any problem that is causing you anxiety.
