Baby Development in Week 20

By week 20, your baby will grow rapidly. Baby will gain weight and will also increase in length. The baby starts moving around and you will be able to feel your baby movements. The weight of your baby by this time is about half pounds. Your baby’s skin will also thicken and add layers under vernix. Vernix protects your baby from amniotic fluid. Other developments include growth of nails, hair and well developed limbs. When you feel your baby movements, keep a check on pattern and let your doctor know.

Diet

By week 20, you need to increase the intake of iron because:

  • Iron plays an important role in growth, development, cell functioning and creation of hormones and connective tissue.
  • Iron carries oxygen through the body which is important for both mom and baby.
  • The amount of iron is depleted by this time and your baby needs new red blood cells.
  • Start taking iron supplements if your doctor has suggested you to take.
  • Add iron rich foods to diet such as eggs, meat and green leafy vegetables.
  • Also add vitamin c rich foods such as citrus fruits to make absorption of iron easier.

Exercise

In week 20:

  • You can practice exercises that strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. Kegel also prevents urine from leaking at time when you sneeze or laugh.
  • Stay conscious while exercising in pregnancy to avoid any kind of injury.
  • Don’t overstretch
  • If any movement or exercise hurts, then immediately stop it.

Precautions

  • Keep your gums healthy. Poor dental hygiene leads to premature labor.
  • Avoid strenuous exercises.
  • Wear a sunscreen while going outside.
  • Avoid drinking too much caffeine.
