Baby Development in 
17  Week 

The baby is about the size of an orange. Brown fat will develop under baby’s skin and will keep the baby warm after birth. More layers of fat will also develop later in pregnancy. No more branching will take place in air passages of the baby. The baby’s lungs will get prepared to take in oxygen. Baby’s size will grow bigger and bigger and now a large placenta is also needed. Placenta plays an important role i.e. supplying nutrients to fetus and removing waste products. The placenta weight will increase.

Diet

2nd Trimester will bring relief from morning sickness and you will suddenly start feeling hungry.  So it is very important to maintain a healthy balanced diet. Eat nutritious foods and take prenatal supplements which are very beneficial for mother and baby both. Don’t forget to eat healthy foods like:

  • Iron rich foods like meat, fish, eggs and dark leafy vegetables.
  • Intake of fiber rich foods like fish, apples, bananas, broccoli, green peas etc.
  • Calcium rich foods like milk, yogurt, broccoli, almonds etc.
  • Foods rich in zinc like spinach, chicken, beans etc.
  • Omega fatty acids are important for eye and brain development of fetus. Vegetable oil and almonds are good source of omega fatty acids.
  • Increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink milk for intake of vitamin d.

Exercise

Some of the safe exercises during second semester are:

  • One of simplest exercise that you can do is walking. It will keep you fit and healthy.
  • Yoga can help in improving mental and emotional health and also improves flexibility. Start with breathing exercises.
  • Exercise using stationary cycle can improve muscle strength.

Precautions

  • You should take care of a few things in your second trimester. You should remember a few tips like:
    • Stay well hydrated.
    • Pregnancy hormones will make your skin a bit sensitive. You should wear sunscreen while going outside.
    • Before taking any medicine to get relief from any problem, make sure that you discuss that medicine with your doctor.
    • You should visit dentist as clean teeth and gums prevent dangerous infections that can affect your pregnancy.
